Buying Guide
A cookware set is a long-term investment and greatly impacts how your dishes end up. So, chefs suggest putting in some time and effort before buying one.

No. of pieces/Type of pieces
A smaller set will be adequate if you only need to cook for one or two people. But, if you have a big family or you are going to buy a set for guests, a large cookware set will be needed. You can still get a cookware set of higher number of pieces at a low price.
Consider your cooking style and needs. Do you need a pot and a skillet? Or would you be happy with a pot, a skillet, and a saucepan?
Size of the cookware
The size of the cookware is also important to consider. If you want a large skillet for cooking, make sure the budget cookware set you are considering has one. If you don’t need a large skillet, choose a smaller set. Buying a cookware set that has all different sizes is not ideal; instead, choose one that has the perfect size for your needs.
Weight of the cookware set
Another factor to consider is the weight of the cookware set. Heavier pots and pans are more durable, but they can also be more difficult to move around. If you are searching for a lightweight set, be sure to look for one made from a durable material like aluminum.
Compatibility with cooktops
Check compatibility with the stovetop at your home, RV, or office. Buy a set compatible with most stovetops if you plan to carry a pot while traveling or cooking outdoors.
Ease of cleaning
You will be cleaning your cookware daily. So select a set that is easy to clean and maintain. There is no point in getting a fancy set when it is difficult to clean, store and maintain.
Handles and lids
Look for a set with sturdy, comfortable handles that will not heat up excessively when cooking. The lids should be tight and made from a material (tempered glass) that can withstand high temperatures without melting or warping.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of buying a budget cookware set?
- Saves money
- Saves time
- Good quality and usability
- Easier to maintain
- You won’t feel too much pain if it breaks or gets damaged
Can I use my cookware set straight out of the box?
Yes, your new cookware set can be used right out of the box. However, it is suggested to wash them with clean water before using them for the first time.
If you have bought a cast iron cookware set, then season it before using it for the first time. Most of the sets come pre-seasoned, but it is recommended to do so.
What type of cooking utensils can I use for cooking?
Avoid using metal utensils if your cookware set is not metal utensil-safe and scratch-resistant. Nylon kitchen utensils are the best option. It is always recommended to use them if the cooking surface doesn’t allow you to use metal utensils. Other options include wood or silicone-made utensils.
How often should I replace my cookware?
You must replace your cookware set after 8-10 years. However, this period varies for one individual to another based on the following factors.
- Using harsh or abrasive cleaning agents
- Scrubbing cookware with metal pads or utensils
- Heating cookware on a non-compatible stovetop
- Storing cookware near a heat source
- Cleaning inside a dishwasher if it is not safe for dishwasher use
- Heating in an oven at extremely high temperatures
What is a Dutch oven used for?
Dutch ovens can be used for a variety of dishes, including stews, roasts, casseroles, and desserts. They are also great for baking bread and other one-dish meals. The even heat distribution of a Dutch oven and its ability to maintain a steady temperature make it great for making tender roasts and braised meats.
What are saucepans used for?
A saucepan can be used to cook a variety of different food items, including sauces, stews, soups, pasta dishes, eggs, and more.
What is the purpose of a stockpot?
A stockpot is a large deep pot designed to make stocks, broths, soups, and boil seafood, vegetables, noodles, and pasta.
How can I season cast iron cookware?
The first step is to clean the pan with hot water and soap. Rinse it well, and then dry it completely. Next, apply a thin layer of oil or fat to the entire surface of the pan. You can use olive or vegetable oil or bacon grease.
Place the pan in a cold oven and set the temperature to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake for one hour. Turn off the heat and allow the pan to cool inside the oven. Repeat this process two more times for a total of three coats. The pan is now ready for use.
